Lying 30km southwest of Panjin City, the preserve made up of reed fields and marshes has been listed as the one of the two largest wetlands in Asia. In autumn, the 1-kilometer-wide, 26-kilometer-long beach turns fire-red as the alkaline-rich grass that grows there changes color and is known as “The Red Beach.” Red-crowned cranes and black-billed seagulls are among the 236 species of birds and 321 species of wild animals found there. It's the southern most nesting ground for the red-crowned crane and the largest habitat in the world for the black-billed gull. The Reed Sea Rare Birds Tour has become a popular tourist activity. A crane-watching terrace has been built for better viewing. This nature reserve has become an international center for black-billed gull research and a provincial research center for studying the protection of rare birds along with nesting, nurturing and migration.
