The Yalu River is a river on the border between China and North Korea. The river's name is ø†¾G½ in Chinese characters, and is pronounced as Yalu Jiang in Mandarin and as Amnok-gang in Korean.
The Yalu River Scenic Spot lies in Dandong area at the middle and lower reaches of the Yalu River that starts from the mouth of the Hun River on the east and flows into the Big East Port on the west. The Yalu River¡¯s overall length is 210 kilometers and its total area is 824.2 square kilometers (including the water area that belongs to Korea). The area of the protection zone is 200 square kilometers.
The Yalu River Scenic Spot is located geographically in an advantageous position. It is warm in winter and cool in summer. There are clear waters and green hills. At the Yalu River Scenic Spot, people can generally survey the scene of both China and Korea, which makes the spot unique.
Yalu River Scenic Spot has been developed as Dandong's largest tourist attraction. It is lined with restaurants, both Chinese and Korean, and venders selling North Korean souvenirs and a look through a telescope. You can get stamps, money, and even a Kim Il Sung pin, although it may a replica. There are various ways to view the other side of the river. Taking the boat into North Korean waters is probably the most popular followed by a walk out on the restored bridge that was bombed by US forces during the Korean war. As you walk out to it¡¯s twisted metal end (a catwalk has been built around it for better viewing) halfway across the river, there are pictures along the bridge telling of the origins of the bridge, it¡¯s impressive Japanese drawbridge design, and it¡¯s bombing. The only thing left on the other side is the cement pilings because the North Korean half was never restored. |
