The first quarter of this year saw 78,000 traffic accidents occurring, killing 18,000 people and injuring 93,000. The figures dropped by 21.5%, 13.2% and 20.2%, respectively, compared with the same period last year, the Guangming Daily reported.
Information from the Ministry of Public Security shows that car crash was still the main form of road accidents, its number accounting for 68.4% of the total number of road accidents.
Most car accidents occurred when drivers exceeded the speed limit. The death toll resulting from this accounted for 14.4% of the total death toll on road.
Driving at high speed was also the most common type of traffic violations, too. In addition, many traffic accidents occurred at roads which had no proper protective facilities, and accidents resulting from this accounted for 71.5% of the total death toll.
